Hey there, fellow parents and brave warriors of the snack time battle!

Welcome to the circus we affectionately call parenting. In this high-wire act of life, we often find ourselves juggling more tasks than a circus clown with ADHD.

Today we're diving into the enchanting world of "Mindful Parenting," where we'll unlock the secrets to keeping your cool amidst the chaos and even sneaking in a zen moment or two.

Hopefully, this will help you maintain your sanity while managing the chaos that comes with full time parenting.

The "Zen Master" Morning Routine

Imagine a world where mornings are your sacred sanctuary, a time of tranquility amidst the rising sun, the symphony of birdsong, and the delightful chaos of everyday life.

In this oasis of calm, even your little one's demands for cereal and Legos can become part of the harmonious rhythm of your day.

Embrace the blissful potential of each morning with a mindful routine that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Here's how you can craft your own "Zen Master" morning routine:

Firstly, as you rise with the sun, open yourself to the possibilities of the new day.

Stand by the window or step outside to witness the sun's warm embrace as it peeks over the horizon. Allow its gentle rays to wash over you, infusing you with energy and a sense of renewal.

As you savor the sunrise, listen to the birds as they create a melodious symphony. Let their songs guide you into a state of mindfulness. Close your eyes and absorb the beauty of this harmonious start to your day.

Give thanks to what you have. I practice thinking about 3 things I am thankful for. It helps me become appreciative of what I already have rather than discontent with what I do not.

Secondly, when your little one arrives, embrace their enthusiasm for breakfast. Prepare their cereal with care, focusing on each action as if it were a small meditation.

Engage with your child, sharing in their excitement for Legos and learning from their unfiltered joy.

As you take a moment for yourself, imagine yourself as a tall and majestic tree. Stand with your feet grounded, arms raised like branches swaying in the wind. Feel the strength and stability within you, just like the roots of a tree that anchor it firmly to the earth.

Life is filled with moments that can feel like storms. As challenges arise, visualize yourself as that tree, standing strong amidst the winds and rains.

When your child's tantrum rages like a storm, remember that you are the steadfast tree, unshaken by the tempest. Breathe deeply and let the storm pass.

Thirdly, embrace moments of stillness throughout the morning.

Whether it's a brief meditation, a few moments of quiet contemplation, or simply sipping your tea in mindful silence, these pockets of calm will nourish your spirit and keep you centered.

Before you fully embrace the day's activities, take a moment to set your intentions. Consider what you hope to achieve, how you'd like to respond to challenges, and the kind of energy you want to bring into your interactions.

Incorporate these elements into your morning routine, and you'll find yourself not only better equipped to navigate the demands of the day but also deeply connected to the serenity that mornings can offer.

By nurturing this sense of calm, you become the conductor of your day's symphony, orchestrating moments of harmony even in the midst of life's bustling cacophony.

Embrace the Chaos

In the grand theatre of parenthood, every day is a captivating performance filled with unexpected twists and turns.

Your little ones, those masterful choreographers of chaos, will choreograph scenes that even the most seasoned improv actors would envy. So, why not step onto the stage of parenting with the spirit of an improv artist?

As your children transform the living room into a racetrack for their fleet of toy cars, consider yourself a participant in their whimsical production.

Become a co-star in their imaginative adventure, and let the dance of chaos sweep you off your feet. Just like a skilled dancer gracefully glides across the stage, you can navigate the unpredictable rhythms of parenting with poise.

Let’s embrace the art of spontaneity like an improv actor who thrives on unscripted moments. Let go of rigid expectations and dive into the scene your little actors have crafted.

React to their imaginative narratives as if you're building upon a storyline that unfolds in real-time. Don’t expect them to move according to your tune. They are children, they are supposed to be chaotic.

As some of the great psychologists will say, point to me a child or teenager who doesn’t tell lies or has a very neat room, that is the person that will need my help.

Instead be like a boat on the river.

Much like a river that carves its own path, allow yourself to flow with the current of their creativity. Adapt to their ever-changing scenarios, whether it's a racetrack, a spaceship, or an enchanted castle.

When you embrace their world, you create an unbreakable bond that strengthens your connection. Like when my girls make a mess of cutting the papers everywhere, I will just join in and make a mess with them. We’re gonna clear later anyway.

Just as comedians find humor in the absurd and unexpected, discover the joy in the whimsical and unpredictable moments your children gifted you. Embrace the hilarity of their antics and find amusement in the unexpected plot twists.

Remember, laughter is the universal language that bridges generations.

I remember seeing a blog post where a mother posted photos of her children making a mess out of her house with sanitary pads and pasting them everywhere.

She had a good laugh out of it instead of going crazy.

We tend to react negatively when things don’t go our way, but remember that spontaneous plot twists serve as invaluable life lessons for both you and your children.

They teach adaptability, resilience, and the beauty of embracing the unknown. In the chaos, there are seeds of growth and learning waiting to sprout.

While routines and plans are essential, cherish the unscripted moments that make parenthood a unique and beautiful adventure. These unpredictable scenes are the essence of your family's story, and they create cherished memories that will be retold with laughter for years to come.

Consider Derek Sivers' story about letting his son take the lead and deviating from a planned visit to a museum.

Instead, they ventured into the unknown, creating an unforgettable experience of cardboard adventures and dancing, all while his son practiced his social skills.

Such unplanned escapades often become the most cherished stories, the ones that bring a smile to your face when you reflect on them.

So, as you continue your journey in the theatre of parenthood, cherish these unscripted moments as gifts from your children. They are not interruptions but invitations to connect, learn, and grow together.

The Jedi Listening Technique

Have you ever been accused of having 'selective hearing'? Welcome to the club; it's a common trait, especially in the realm of parenting.

When your little padawan's lightsaber seemingly requires batteries for the hundredth time, consider honing your selective listening skills.

This technique doesn't mean you're neglecting your child's needs but rather cultivating the art of discernment and prioritization, allowing you to maintain your own sense of inner balance.

1. The Jedi Mind Trick: Imagine yourself as a Jedi Master, utilizing the legendary Jedi Mind Trick to focus your attention where it's needed most. In this scenario, you're not ignoring your child but rather channeling your inner Jedi to discern the urgency of their requests. This helps you respond effectively while also teaching your child about patience and resourcefulness.

2. Cosmic Awareness: Embrace the concept of cosmic awareness, akin to the Jedi's connection with the Force. As you tune in to your child's needs, you're also attuned to the larger universe around you. This practice allows you to maintain a broader perspective, fostering mindfulness in the chaos of daily life.

3. Prioritization Skills: Selective listening is, at its core, about effective prioritization. Acknowledge your child's requests, determine their importance, and respond accordingly. This teaches your child valuable life skills, such as problem-solving and patience, as they learn to wait their turn.

4. Mindful Engagement: When you do choose to listen fully, engage with your child in a mindful and active way. Give them your full attention during those crucial moments when they genuinely need it. This ensures that your interactions are meaningful and fosters a strong connection.

5. Creating Boundaries: Selective listening also means setting boundaries, which are essential for maintaining balance in family life. Clearly communicate when you are available to engage fully and when you may need some space. This empowers your child to respect your needs as well.

6. The Power of 'No': Recognize that it's okay to say 'no' when the situation warrants it. By doing so, you teach your child about limitations and the importance of accepting them gracefully. It's a valuable life lesson that will serve them well in the future.

7. Self-Care and Cosmic Balance: Remember that selective listening is a form of self-care. It allows you to recharge and maintain your own cosmic balance. In doing so, you become a more present and patient parent, ultimately benefiting both you and your child.

Incorporating the Jedi Listening Technique into your parenting toolkit is about finding the delicate balance between meeting your child's needs and maintaining your own well-being.

It's a skill that not only enhances your parenting journey but also empowers your child to become a well-rounded individual capable of navigating life's challenges.

A win-win for you and your child.

Breathe, Laugh, Repeat

When the tumultuous tides of parenting threaten to sweep you away, remember this: you're part of a grand and timeless parenting circus.

The ringmaster of this show is none other than you, and in the midst of the daily acts and high-flying acrobatics, there's profound wisdom to be found.

Here's how you can not only breathe, laugh, and repeat but also elevate the parenting circus to a source of joy and wonder.

When life's chaos swirls around you, take three deep breaths and find your centre. In this stillness, you become the unwavering pillar that anchors your family.

In the circus of parenting, the centre ring is your sanctuary of calm and laughter is the timeless remedy for life's ups and downs.

When the circus gets wild, embrace the comedic side of it.

Find humour in the unexpected moments, the quirky questions, and the charming antics of your little performers. I always find my little girls really funny with their cheeky antics. You can either see their endless bound of energy, something good or something irritating.

Also cherish every "why" question as a ticket to a world of wonder.

Sometimes it can get irritating when your child ask a thousand why for seemingly just to annoy you. Sometimes, it feels like they asked for the sake of asking. However, ‘why’ is our child's curiosity is an invitation to explore the universe together.

We can question back on why they want to know and also enquire whether they understand what we are saying. We should never put them down and ask them to stop asking.

Encourage their inquisitiveness and see the world anew through their eyes.

So rather than dreading the mess, embrace it as a testament to a life well-lived. Messes are evidence of creativity, exploration, and uninhibited play.

Picture yourself in the front row of the parenting circus, popcorn in hand, eagerly awaiting the next act. Every day unfolds as a new performance, and you have a front-row seat to witness your child's growth and development.

Savor each moment like a delectable treat and find joy in the chaos, knowing that a clean home can wait, but these precious moments cannot.

Of course, all these don’t come naturally or easily. I am definitely not a patient person. But parenting does force you to become a better person out of necessity.

Just as circus performers practice their craft relentlessly, parents continually develop their skills of resilience and adaptability. Each challenge you face is an opportunity to strengthen these attributes, making you a more adept ringmaster.

So celebrate even the tiniest victories. Whether it's a successful bedtime routine, a heartfelt hug, or a well-timed snack, acknowledge these triumphs with pride. They are the building blocks of your family's story.
